This is the latest version of a constantly
revised webliography.
It has long been impossible to record every piece, page or
article dealing with plagiarism - if ever it was possible.
My Google News Alert brings in three or four new hits every day, sometimes
more.
I now record only the more significant finds, the ones with something new to
say.
A number of pages cited here can no longer be accessed at
the URL given.
They may have moved to a different
address, they may have been removed altogether.
When
known, these are shown in gray.
This is one of the problems of internet citation - and of plagiarism
detection!
Three things you can try:
<1> copy and paste details from this page (eg
author and/or title) into your favorite search engine/s and see if there is a
new link - or perhaps a copy elsewhere;
<2> use Google's cache to find
a copy of the original - and print it out if you find it; the cache does not
last forever!
<3> see if there is a copy
in The Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive, <http://webdev.archive.org/>.
Recently added entries are marked
.
If you
find a dud link, please let me
know.

A review of the literature which reminds us that (1) online
detection systems are far from perfect, (2) that many elements have to be in
place to help and encourage students to become good scholars, and (3) that
changes in assessment & assignment may play a vital role: "Staff can now be
shown that their assignments can be answered by a single google query and
repeated high levels of plagiarism on such assignments may force them to
reflect on their own practices". The study also looks at use of online
detection tools as a means of improving student writing.

The site suggests that a great many of the sites offering custom-written

this includes many sites with apparently US or UK names and addresses.
The site offers much advice on plagiarism avoidance, and also a page which
suggests that Turnitin.com may be ineffective and unreliable.

for detected plagiarism, based on amount of plagiarism, offender's previous
record, offender's experience/ seniority, perceived intent, and other
factors. This leads to a more fair and transparent process: first-year
offenders with one or two short unattributed but copied passages would be
treated more leniently than a third-year student who has borrowed heavily,
or is found to have bought a custom essay etc. The full report which details

Turnitin is proving useful in British schools and
colleges, but is recognised as "not a silver bullet"; at the same time,
there is increase in custom-written essays (which may evade Turnitin).
Included is the cautionary tale of a foreign student who, when asked if an
essay was his, happily admitted it wasn't. When given a viva voce, however,
he was able to show that he had learned and understood the material - his
problem was that he did not understand the rules of academic papers.

Some fee companies have free trial
offers.
I would suggest that online plagiarism detection services, be they free or for fee, should be checked before money or text changes hands. They are often marketed as providing help to students before submission to their instructors. Some are genuine. Some of these companies also offer custom written essays, papers, dissertations and theses - and it is not beyond the bounds of reason to wonder if some of these actually keep, and then sell on, the papers submitted. Other services may check a limited number of (probably internet) sources - but not subscription services or any kind of database of past submissions. Inclusion of any site here does not imply endorsement or recommendation of that site or product. Caveat emptor!

MyDropBox.com <http://www.mydropbox.com/>
(Comment 2003:) Plagiserve.com
appears to have gone out of business, although Edutie.com keeps going. Meanwhile, if you go to the
Plagiserve site, you are now re-directed to MyDropBox, a site which is very similar to Edutie, making much
the same claims. Intriguing, especially as MyDropBox seems to be claiming that their home page has been
up since 1999. Check out the About Us pages for more similarities.
(Revisited 2006:) This site also features an online marking and commenting
service.
The Plagiarism Checker <http://www.dustball.com/cs/plagiarism.checker/> offers a free version and a subscription service which is claimed to be "3x as accurate as the free version." The software appears to be endorsed by the University of Maryland; do read the small print carefully.

A number of pages cited here can no longer be accessed at the
URL given.
They may have moved to a different address,
they may have been removed altogether.
This is one of
the problems of internet citation - and of plagiarism detection!
Three things you can try:
<1> copy and paste details from this page (eg author and/or
title) into your favorite search engine/s and see if there is a new link;
<2> use Google's cache to find a copy of the
original - and print it out if you find it; the cache does not last
forever!
<3> see if there is a copy in The
Wayback Machine at the Internet Archive, <http://webdev.archive.org/>.
